How it works

Three pillars, one membership.

Storytelling software, live classes from certified editors and the kindest community in genre fiction, working together so you finish your novel.

The Story Arc in Fictionary StoryTeller: a novel's arc, scene by scene, from the inciting incident through plot points one and two to the climax, against the recommended arc

Writing a good novel is hard work

Fictionary has worked with thousands of writers in every genre. These are the frustrations they name most often, and what the membership is built to solve.

  • “I’ll never finish”

Without an efficient method and real accountability, life keeps getting in the way. Most manuscripts are abandoned for lack of structure and support, not talent.

  • The messy middle

Without story structure at the level of the scene, the middle becomes a fog you can’t write through.

  • Endless revisions

Where do you start, what do you fix, how do you know it’s done? Without a structural framework, revision is guesswork.

  • The genre trap

Genre readers have strong expectations. Without your genre’s conventions at a structural level, a novel won’t satisfy, however well it’s written.

  • “Is my story any good?”

Friends are kind but vague, beta readers find typos, writing groups disagree. You need structured, expert feedback grounded in craft.

  • Self-doubt

The voice that says you’re not a real writer. Every serious writer knows it, and the right community can turn it down.

The software

Best-in-class storytelling software

Outline, write and edit your novel in one place, with the story structure for your genre built in. StoryTeller Premium is included with every membership.

  1. Import your manuscript or start your outline
  2. See your story arc, visualized
  3. Get feedback from Edwina, your AI writing instructor
  4. Outline, write and edit with a plan, not guesswork

StoryTeller provides the structure and Edwina analyzes the scenes, but they don’t do the writing. Every word of your novel belongs to you.

The classes

Live classes with helpful editors

Weekly, one-hour, interactive classes taught by Fictionary certified editors. Your actual manuscript and your actual questions, answered by instructors who know your genre.

  • Certified StoryCoach Editors, not generalists

Every instructor is trained in structural story editing and in your genre’s conventions, not just writing in general.

  • Core training recorded, your pages live

Structured lessons are recorded so you never miss core content. The live sessions where members share their work are never recorded, so you can ask anything about your story.

  • New courses through the year

Courses start four times a year and new genre courses are added regularly, so the next one is never far away.

The community

The kindest genre fiction community

A warm, rigorous community where kindness is a non-negotiable rule, not a platitude. Weekly accountability, lasting connections, and Ask an Editor for expert feedback on your manuscript.

  • Encouragement at every stage

Your story and your progress are treated with respect and care, on your first chapter or your fifth revision.

  • Nowhere for imposter syndrome to hide

Ask any question, share any struggle. Nobody is made to feel small.

  • Rigorous and kind, not one or the other

Warm support with serious craft. Members call it “the most rigorous and most welcoming place I’ve ever written.”

  • Feedback from credentialed editors

Ask an Editor connects you with Fictionary Certified StoryCoach Editors: structural experts, not just well-read friends.

“I joined Fictionary after years of toxic writing groups and expensive courses that delivered nothing. In my first week, I asked a question I’d been too embarrassed to ask anywhere else, and got a thoughtful, detailed answer from a certified editor within hours. This community is the real thing.”
